Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is for SH class in Richmond California. We are a special needs class (severely handicapped) grades 9-12. We teach various subjects such as daily living skills, reading, writing, math, community integration, and personal skills just to name a few.

Some of our students have great difficulty participating in, and learning through our standard curriculum, but put them in front of a computer and they excel like crazy! They can manipulate their way around a computer better than some of our adults! Problem is, we only have one decent computer in our classroom, the rest are extremely outdated and slow as molasses! We are unable to utilize learning programs that would be so beneficial for these students.

We need a computer with the capabilities for students to access computer programs. We currently use a program called Start to Finish for reading comprehension. One of the huge obstacles is, we do not have a computer with a microphone for student to record their reading fluency. The reading program purpose is for listening comprehension, building word recognition, building word recognition and fluency, recreational reading without testing, and assessment of independent reading. A computer is great for our students to learn how to type, and learn how to use a computer since technology is a part of our every day life. Students also use computers to identify survival signs, typing and numerous other computer programs.

Our district is in great financial distress, making it impossible for us to get help from them. Your help would greatly impact our students learning environment. Thank you so much for your consideration!
