This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students want to learn and be the best that they can, yet, they live in a neighborhood where the resources at hand do not match the level of their curiosity. These students live in the South Bronx in New York. They are little scientists who want to know everything!
My students show their curiosity by the number of questions they ask each day.
They look for answers to these questions in the books they read.
Unfortunately, many of my students are reading below grade level. This means they cannot access the books that have all the answers to their questions.
My Project
One of the 1st grade learning standards is to engage in research. We no longer use print encyclopedias to do this and neither should my 1st graders if they are going to learn. 21st century learning skills are crucial to student success in the world we live in. Yet in my classroom, we have little access to computers, so my students do not have the opportunity to develop computer literacy. Having access to a laptop in the classroom will ensure they have what they need to be successful.
They can work together to research and write about the world around them and the world outside of their neighborhood.
They can also use the laptop to play educational games which will enhance their reading, writing, and math skills. This is especially beneficial for students that are visual and hands on learners. Having a class laptop will also give more of my students access to online programs our school uses such as Mathletics (Math Program), Myon (Reading Program), and HMH Science Dimensions (Science Program).
