Computer for Inner-City New York Debaters!

My students need a laptop computer.

This project is fully funded

I coach a Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum debate team in the inner-city school where I have taught for the last three years. My debaters regularly stun me with their dedication and diligence - for this past resolution, for instance, several of them based their cases on Kantian morality (which I taught them last month but which I had not explained how to apply to economic sanctions - they figured that out on their own). Their hard work pays off - last year, three of my debaters qualified for the State Championship and, this year, three are already half-qualified and one fully qualified.

My debaters are constantly trying to research the current topic and revise their cases, but, frequently, the lack of resources in my school (and in their own homes) will get in their way of doing so. (For instance, the library is closed to students and the computer room has only 25 very slow computers to serve the school's population of over 1000.) Due to severe budget cuts, my principal unfortunately doesn't even have money to buy copy paper (we teachers have to buy our own) much less provide enough working computers for the students.

A laptop kept in the debate room (i.e., my classroom) will enable the debaters to conduct their research, write their arguments, and polish their cases.

With your help, my debaters can really work to their fullest potential and continue to achieve great things despite the obstacles they face at home and at school.
