My Students

"... Technology is indistinguishable from magic." is a quote by Arthur C. Clarke, a British author. Students have technology at their fingertips at home. I think it is important for them to use technology at school to learn how to turn the magic of technology into knowledge of the world.

My school is a 3-5 school with approximately 800 students enrolled.

Our school population is 60% white, 37% black and 3% Hispanic, Asian, or other. In our school 40% of students are on free or reduced lunch. I teach 16 third grade students in Alabama. Next year, I am expecting to have 20+ students in my class. They love technology. They talk about technology constantly. They discuss their gaming consoles, their telephones they wished they had, and their parents' tablets like it is their own. They especially love computers and computer games. They have other interests besides technology, too. In my class I have artists, baseball players, drummers, singers, football players, cheerleaders, piano players, gymnasts, avid readers, and serious video gamers. They are lovable, kind, and curious. They are your typical, but also every day extraordinary third graders.

My Project

I would love an additional computer in my classroom, so I can make a technology center during my literacy and math blocks. I currently have two desktop computers in my classroom that students use mainly to take reading tests. I would like to teach students to use the computer for research, to type documents, make PowerPoint presentations, and play educational learning games. I feel an additional desktop could help make this dream a reality. During reading time, I rotate groups of 4 students to centers. They read to themselves, listen to our story and interact without learning skill, and study different word patterns. I would also like for them to go to a computer center. At the computer center they could practice and interact with our reading skills, publish their writing, research science or social study events, and complete engaging math drills. I believe that by having this computer center, my students will be more excited and more engaged in learning.

Students are eager to learn.

They want to be smart and appreciated. They long for people to acknowledge their ideas. I think the "magic of technology" can help them interact with the world and knowledge in a way that they are comfortable. They can reach new heights in their learning, and also learn 21st century work place skills.
