This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher at P.S. 169. P.S. 169 is a Title 1 school in the heart of Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The school's population is diverse, with many English Language Learners.
The third grade is a difficult year for children because they experience Citywide tests for the first time. This is a daunting task for any child, but especially for those who are struggling with the English language. The Citywide reading test requires reading passages and answering questions that test comprehension in areas such as making inferences, drawing conclusions and predicting outcomes.
The Complete Set of Comprehension Card Boxes available through Lakeshore Learning helps children practice these comprehension areas, as well as others. It offers reading passages at various difficulty levels, as well as self-checking multiple choice questions. I would love to have these comprehension boxes in my classroom to provide extra support to my students who need it.
