Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work in a co-taught Head Start classroom. Our class comprises low-income students of all abilities and backgrounds in an urban school district. Teaching our students about vermicomposting and letting them participate in their worm farm composting project supports learning during our six-week insect unit and our six-week unit on growing plants. A worm composting station is something we can utilize year-round. With a worm composting station, we will give our students responsibilities like checking the compost system daily and refilling it with fresh biodegradable material. Following mealtimes, students will learn to separate fruit and vegetable wastes for the composting system. Students will also learn about recycling, as we can turn newspaper and cardboard scraps into food for their worms. Worm composting also encompasses core values such as responsibilities and respect for life. Allowing our students to participate in your worm composting system will also provide opportunities to take care of the worms. Learning and observing how these tiny creatures can produce something that helps the Earth is a valuable lifelong lesson for our preschoolers! We will also take every opportunity to extend these lessons about composting and recycling to students' families at home.
