Composting: Using Our Food Scraps to Grow More Food!

My students need a pitchfork, a compost mixing tool, compost waste collectors (with filters and bags), gardening gloves, and a composting demonstration kit.

My Students

Living in an urban area, most of my students have never had a garden. Some of my students don't know that the food they get at a grocery store doesn't just appear there. Furthermore, my students understand that we should recycle paper and plastic, but what about their food scraps? We can compost them!

My students are in third grade (7-9 year olds).

They attend a community school that receives Title I funding due to the high numbers of low-income families. In addition, our school serves a large population of students with various disabilities. Our school has a special program for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. In my classroom of 16 students, there are 5 students on the spectrum. All students are included in the classroom and bring unique qualities to our classroom community. Students learn to work with their classmates of varying abilities. It is amazing to see what they can accomplish by working together.

My Project

My students need a pitchfork, a compost mixing tool, compost waste collectors (with filters and bags), gardening gloves, and a composting demonstration kit. With these materials, my students will be able to learn about the benefits and importance of composting. Students will learn why we compost food scraps, how to compost, and how we can use the finished compost to grow new plants. Learning these things will change my students lives forever. Learning about composting will instill the importance of reducing waste and reusing materials in my students. I hope that making a connection between composting and gardening will also encourage my students to become life-long gardeners. My students and I will be able to collect food scraps from our cafeteria. We will then be able to add these scraps to our school's compost bins. We will mix and turn the compost and observe the materials as they break down. When the compost is finished, students will sift it and add it to the plants in the garden.

My school is constantly improving.

We are in the process of building a larger composting system in order to reduce the waste being produced in our cafeteria. In addition, with more compost being produced, we will be able to enrich our garden's™ soil and thereby improve the quality of our plants in the garden. With the materials from this project, our students will learn about composting and gardening. They will be reducing waste and producing nutrient rich compost for our garden's plants.
