Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Composition notebooks are a great blank slate for students to reflect and show their understanding of what we're learning. At the beginning of each English class, we will use the notebooks as a journal with given prompts related to current events, goal-setting, and memory logging. We will also use this space to practice grammar concepts taught and academic vocabulary from the texts we've been reading; that way, they can apply what they've learned in an authentic manner. An example of such a prompt is "What do you attribute your success to? In your response, use the vocabulary word 'attribute' as both a noun and a verb."
With only months left in their school year, these high school seniors should have the time and space to process their feelings about their next steps.
That is possible with your help.
Currently, students have been using looseleaf paper, which easily gets lost, or Google Docs, but studies show that the act of writing helps one remember and think more critically about the work. A physical notebook will also help with the creative outlet that so many of them have, which is why the Posca markers will help them decorate the covers. In the long term, we hope these notebooks can serve as a memory book for years to come.
