Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are kind, heartwarming, students who are eager to learn about academics, society, but also about the arts! Their ears perk up when they hear a Vivaldi melody and whose breaths are taken away when they hear a Beethoven piece. They’re orchestra kids whom are hungry to learn to create and perform and inspire on a stringed instrument but have very little means.
Our city is a huge supporter of the arts.
Our school district and our city have many opportunities and events for the students to perform. But our campus and students are in the poorest neighborhood in the city. According to the 2010 federal census bureau, our students’ neighborhood is the 3rd poorest neighborhood in the whole entire country.
This not only affects my students by having to overcome many obstacles to obtain a good education, but it affects us teachers as well as to the resources we are able to provide our students with. I pay out of my pocket and fundraiser tremendously. But it would be nice to fundraise less so I can teach more.
My Project
My orchestra students are constantly asking for arrangements of songs they here from all kinds of media. They tell me they want to learn how to play certain songs and melodies so they can play it for happy occasions and in some cases for sad occasions.
If their requests are classical pieces or baroque pieces, which they hear in their video games or movies, I find those for them.
When it comes to modern styles, there isn’t much out there written for middle school orchestra.
With a music software program like “Finale,” from “Woodwind & Brasswind,” the students can arrange and compose the songs of their heart's desire. While creating these arrangements with this software program students can learn more about the fundamentals of music theory. In the end “Finale” can help mold the student’s craft and help the students perform their “Composed for You,” arrangements with confidence and excitement!
