My Students
My students are of mixed ability levels in a rural school setting. Our school literally looks out over a cow pasture. Literature is a way to have these students see beyond what is in our immediate surroundings. I want them all to see the importance of being an effective communicator through reading, writing, and speaking no matter where their paths lead them following high school.
My students are both high-achievers and struggling readers.
They all deserve my best, every single day.
My Project
After tremendous success teaching Clint Smith's Counting Descent last year, I want to add more diverse voices to my classroom and will do this by adding Jose Olivarez' first collection of poetry. There is something special about teaching an entire collection of poetry, as students follow a poet's thought process from start to finish.
What is most special about this collection is that a student actually introduced me to this poet.
Brenda followed Olivarez on her blog this year and found someone whose voice and content mattered to her. Her excitement led me to explore his work more on my own.
I am also so excited that Jose Olivarez has agreed to Skype with my class once we finish reading the collection. Please help us meet our goal!
