Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a public kindergarten through eighth grade school in a high-poverty, urban community in New Jersey. They love music class and are great musicians. Even though we don't have a budget for new materials, we find creative ways to make music together.
Thanks to a grant, we received a set of student keyboards two years ago but constant daily use has sadly taken several of these instruments out of circulation.
Students now must share instead of having their own piano to play.
My Project
If we receive five student keyboards, each student that is learning piano would no longer have to share an instrument with a classmate. Our broken instruments would be replaced and no one would have to spend class time waiting for his or her turn at the piano. Every moment would be a learning moment for my sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who are studying piano.
Student engagement would be at an all time high if students could have a hands-on instrumental learning experience every moment of music class.
These keyboards would make a huge difference by eliminating wait time and increasing playing time.
