My Project

We have an amazing set of 21 tall tubano drums at AES that I use with students in preschool through fifth grade. After studying World Music Drumming during pandemic isolation, I decided that a drumming project would be a perfect "hands-on" activity to undertake with older students for our return to the classroom last fall.

My students were incredibly engaged and excited while drumming.

My principal and colleagues were impressed by the musicality of the sounds coming from my classroom. I was delighted to see students working together to make more complex pieces of music. I was heartened to see students creating and maintaining their own individual patterns while validating the contributions of their classmates. To see these individual voices contribute to the full ensemble is a beautiful experience and a powerful metaphor for our larger society.

Unfortunately, our tubano collection is incomplete. We do not have enough drums for all of the students. Last year, students would take turns or share a drum. I believe the experience is more powerful when each student has his / her own instrument. These nesting drums will bring our collection to 24 tubanos which will provide each student with a drum.
