My Students
Greetings from the land of eighth grade in Chicago! We are a school located on the Northwest side of the city and we are a class of socially-minded young adults who are ready to be the change we want to see in this world!
My students are bright, enthusiastic, socially involved students who are always looking for the next great book to make them think!
We have been working on issues that are relevant to them and to our evolving society. These students are also enrolled in the school's Algebra program and are hardworking students who love a good book as much as a good math problem! With recent budget. A Language Arts class is only as good as its oldest book.
My Project
These novels that I am requesting need to be united with their family! Through a learning opportunity in the Chicago Public Schools I was able to obtain 20 copies of The Hate You Give and and 20 copies of The Best We Could Do, but that is not enough for our large class sizes. The unit I am working on would have me using these novels as companion novels in exploring the power, education, community and the American Dream. While this may not seem like a big project the impact that it will have on my students is enormous. The need for new and fresh perspectives in Young Adult Literature never goes away and it will help them to expand their horizons!
More than a third of students from low‑income households
