My Students
Our school is a very special place and our students are no exception. Nestled in a busy Brooklyn neighborhood, our students come from all 5 boroughs of New York City to be here each day. They stay late, busy at clubs or other afterschool activities.
Our library-loving students are good-natured, curious and hardworking.
They had to be at the very top of their class to gain admission to our school. Our school is at 60% poverty, just shy of the Title 1 designation.
My Project
This project will fund a special aspect of our Maker Space, allowing students to create paper circuits with light-up LED lights. Students will gain experience with creating functional circuitry, wiring the battery to the LED lights with copper tape and possibly even having a switch or button! (We have requested a small number of these). These finished pieces will be used for greeting cards--possibly for the holiday season, or just to a parent, teacher, or friend! We also hope to make buttons which we know our students will love! We also have requested supplies to create personalize buttons, which we know our students will LOVE making and then using to adorn their backpacks, jackets, etc. Another cultural throwback to the 80's, which will add to its appeal!
We are SO excited for students to use their engineering skills in a creative environment, outside of tests and grades.
We think the opportunity to tinker and have fun will provide stress-relief and also a chance to experiment with materials they might not have at home.
Another project this will fund is a set of two phone lens kits. We know our students will love using their phones to take imaginative and artistic photos--not just for social media or games. This is a great resource to own because it is reusable and will enhance our program through the introduction of creative photography!
Librarians across the country are re-imagining their spaces as learning commons, places where people can collaborate, create, invent. We are excited to join this movement as we transform and expand our library's resources and purpose!
