My Students
There are over 500 students at my school this year and will each be coming into my classroom, the STEAM lab, once a week to learn engineering and design, computer science and robotics/automation concepts through project-based learning opportunities! These students of diverse backgrounds range all the way from 1st to 5th grade. Students are in charge of their learning when they enter the lab; they assign roles, set goals, and make sure each group member has a role to contribute to the solution to the problem or project.
The focus of our school and district is on equity, giving all our students the opportunity to experience authentic, engaging and hands-on learning experiences that connect to their world.
My Project
This is my first year at my school as the STEAM teacher. One of my goals in my first year was to create an after school competitive robotics team at our school to compete in FIRST Lego League. Thanks to administration and a local grant, we were able to create a team of ten 5th grade girls and boys that are currently working hard for their competition in December.
Our one team has already generated interest from many students and families that we are hoping to create more teams in the next few years!
With additional Lego Spike Prime kits, we can form more teams while also keeping participation costs lower for families so that students who have a desire to join a competitive robotics team can participate. This would also align with our district goals of welcoming and making sure our students and families have the opportunities to participate in the activities available at our school.
The students and I would be extremely grateful for these resources. Thank you very much!
