This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a small high school that can often feel like a family. Our students care about one another and treat the teachers and staff as they are treated, like they are important.
Our students are appreciative of what they have including access to a library.
They are delighted when I tell them they can check out three books at a time as many times as they would like. Many of our students come from other countries and sometimes remote areas where they did not have access to libraries. Even students from the local area, a part of the city considered a book desert, have had limited access to a reading culture outside of school.
My Project
Each year, area high schools arrange for a reading competition. In order to participate, my students need access to the books involved in the event.
I have eleven students at my high school who would like to participate in the reading competition, but we only own one copy of two of the titles.
Please help my students be successful readers, build community, grow, and have access to this fun literacy event. We have plans to meet twice a week to read, discuss, and learn sticky-note notetaking strategies. For many of my students, English is not their first language, and we are determined to be contenders.
