Compelling Classics and Powerful Poetry

My Students

Do you remember the first time you picked up a classic and realized that you could actually enjoy a book published years ago? That's the challenge and adventure facing my students!

I teach at a public school in New York.

My students are gifted, motivated and diverse. They are eager for a challenge and are enthusiastic learners. They consume the books in my classroom library at incredible speeds, and I like to keep my library well-stocked so they will be encouraged to keep reading and trying new things.

My Project

The books that I'm requesting will help my students experiment with different styles of poetry, as well as YA classics. I'm excited to introduce them to poets like Nikki Giovanni, Paul Janeczko, and Naomi Shihab Nye. Reading books like "Robinson Crusoe," "Treasure Island," and "The Secret Garden," will help students explore different forms of formal English, and take distant adventures.

These poets will help my students explore their own writing of poetry, in the future.

Since 140 students share the books in my library, having a new selection of books will allow each student to try a variety of genres--both within poetry and classic literature.
