Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As part of the freshman curriculum, we have a unit on empathy and biases that is anchored by the award-winning novel, Refugee by Alan Gratz. Students explore the topic of "coming of age" through the stories of young refugees from different time periods, all of whom face unimaginable hardships as they seek safety. Class discussions are anchored on why people make the decision to flee (voluntary/forced), perspective, empathy, and what it means to "come of age" during a time of crisis and war. Moreover, this unit will culminate with a class trip where we see how individuals and organizations respond to this crisis. Connecticut's New Haven based nonprofit organization, Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services, helps support refugee and asylum seekers who have settled in Connecticut within the last two years. One of their programs tackles Basic Needs which focuses on providing a "free marketplace" of household goods and cleaning items to their clients through In-Kind donations.
This project will focus on providing much-needed items for babies and infants whose families have made the arduous and painful journey of leaving behind their homeland.
We will be providing diapers, wipes, dish soap, burp clothes, wash clothes, and creams to help lift the burden parents face.
Once we get our supplies, we will organize an assembly day where students come together to sort and pack donated items. They will also be including personalized notes of encouragement and kindness in each package.
Assigned tasks to students, will include packing, labeling, and organizing the packages. After delivery, we will reflect as a class on the impact of the project, discussing what was learned and how it can be continued or improved upon in the future. Students will not only be addressing immediate needs but also fostering compassion and understanding in their community.
