Compassion is Needed Now More Than Ever

Help me give my students Robot Kits. We will work with Project Invent and Build.Org to change lives this year!

My Project

For several years now in my STEM Club we have taken part in different invention competitions. At a national level, we have worked with the not-for-profit company, Project Invent, and on a more local level we have worked with Build.org. With both organizations we pair up with a Community Partner, learn about their needs, and use empathy to design them an innovative and technological product to solve an identified need! Students will complete a needs assessment through an interview with their community partner that gives them a chance to imagine walking in their shoes through whatever need is present in their lives. This will help students learn about compassion by seeing the world through the eyes of another person

Rather than tell my students what we should make to help solve these individuals' problems, I want to give them these Robot Kits so that they can explore and discover themselves what can technology can do to address the given need.

This is how students will learn to act to alleviate the suffering of others or help those in need.

While we have used similar items before, a lot of the items have been consumables, so we are looking for something more indestructable! Before we build anything we will talk with the community partners and document what they have to say, then the fun begins with the human centered design process! This process involves prototyping and iterating designs to work to alleviate their individual partner's needs.

To assess the student level of empathy, compassion, and understanding, students will take a pre-assessment and a post-assessment to determine if they have grown to be more compassionate as a result of these projects!
