Compassion for the Elderly

Help me give my students compassion for the elderly and those in nursing homes.

My Project

Compassion for the elderly will give the students an opportunity to see and feel compassion for the elderly and those living in nursing homes. We will read the books about why people go to nursing homes and talk about the differences of living in a traditional home and living in a nursing home. We will visit a nursing home and meet some of the clients that are living there. We will hear their stories and find their smiles. We will talk to them about when their family comes to visit and how it feels when they leave.

When we return to our school, we will talk about how we could make their better and how we can show compassion to them.

We will periodically color pictures and investigate going to visit more often if we can. We will send Valentine’s Day cards to all residents living in nursing homes in our community. We will also talk about different ways to show compassion for other people who are living in a different home than the “traditional” home. We will measure the success of this project by: the words written in the cards, the level of emotional generosity and support the students are willing to share, the way that the students speak to older individuals who walk in the building, and the compassion that they showed others in the building.
