I would love to get a class set of core literature books for my students as some of them have not had the opportunity to read an entire chapter book from beginning to end. I will tie this story in with Social Emotional Learning and teaching students to be compassionate towards one another. I will have my students participate in Readers Theater, class discussions and other hands-on activities to help guide my students in learning in both language arts and social emotional learning. Students will read, "Wonder" which will help my students by seeing the world through the eyes of August who has facial anomalies and is seen as "different" than others. They will learn about people with disabilities and how their compassion cannot only reach those in their immediate area but also globally. After learning about compassion, students will work on a Kindness Campaign after reading to teach other students around the school to be accepting towards others, regardless of differences, and to teach them compassion. They will create posters and present an assembly to show that we are all human and everyone should be treated with kindness. To measure success, there will be less incidents of bullying and more incidents of students standing up for one another. Students will also share stories of how they can be compassionate to others outside the school setting.
