Compassion and Active Citizenship: An Expedition About Chickens
Help me give my students the starter kit for incubating, hatching and caring for chickens, so that we can learn how to care for them and advocate for humane practices in Chicago and beyond.

My Students
Welcome to Chicago. We are the city of neighborhoods. My school is nestled on a tree lined street. You may see a group of students with strong character words on their backs, Compassion, Critical thinker, Integrity, Explorer, and Active Citizen. These traits are at the root of everything we do at Polaris Charter Academy.
My students may be wondering where their next meal will come from, but for the next 8 hours, they will be passionately learning all that they can so that they have their pick of the best middle and high schools the city has to offer.
As the bell rings, students walk with younger siblings, with grandparents and moms.
I am a teacher in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the city of Chicago. My students are neighborhood kids. My students are passionate, Sox and Cubbie fans. My boys are passionate about basketball and my girls love all things dancing and video gaming. I have a pretty typical 3rd-grade class, amidst the violence and poverty they see outside their windows, our classroom is a safe haven.
My Project
The materials we are requesting will help third graders learn about compassion and active citizenship through raising chickens from egg to teenage chicken. Our students are passionate about social justice and they will learn about how chickens can be a source of food and also have a humane life.
We are requesting two incubators, heating plates, Egg candler, bedding, feed, feeding and water containers for our chickens.
These materials will mean that city kids will have a small glimpse at what kids on the farm experience. They will be able to build compassion and active citizenship by caring for another living creature that they may not typically be able to interact with alive.
