This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hands-on activities are integral for students to explore, discover, discuss, and meaningfully construct mathematical concepts and relationships. Using these compasses in lessons will engage my students and help them best learn important Geometry concepts.

I am a high school mathematics department chair and teacher that works with an under-served, highly minority student population.

My students come from low-income families, often with parents or guardians who have not studied math beyond Algebra 1, let alone attend college for mathematics. Although most of my students were not born into families that have excelled in academics, they have the capability and desire to learn all available math courses including Geometry, Algebra 2, and higher.

My Project

Students are much more engaged in active lessons and as a result learn the material better than with traditional lecture style lessons. However, implementing active lessons require more supplies for the students to work with than my current school budget allows for. These compasses not only are used in drawing constructions which is a state Geometry standard, but they can be used to teach many concepts throughout the entire Geometry curriculum. The students in all Geometry classes will develop a deeper understanding of important concepts such as angle relationships with parallel lines and triangle congruencies by physically drawing out the theorems and postulates presented in their textbooks.

Your financial support will help our school's Geometry classrooms become more engaging and creative spaces that truly facilitate and enhance student learning.

You will help make it possible for students to not just pass Geometry as a graduation requirement, but to hopefully also increase their enjoyment and interest to study higher math.
