This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a diverse, urban school that serves a population of students who have many needs from Kindergarten through eighth grade.

About 92% of the students in our school live at, or below, the poverty line.

Our school is a full-service inclusion model. This means that I teach all students including those with behavioral, social-emotional, or learning needs. Of the 20 second graders in my class, at least four students will have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) with needs in reading, writing, math, communication, fine-motor, and self-regulation skills. At least two-thirds of my students will speak another language where English is not their primary language.

My Project

Currently, my students assemble on a similar designed rug that has been used in my classroom for eight years. It has been loved and worn down by almost 200 children. Despite efforts to keep this rug clean, it shows the wear and tear of dirt, mud, water stains, marker stains, and who knows what else! It is unraveling at the edges and filled with dust. I do my best to make my classroom in our 100-year-old building look beautiful each year; however, the room just won't feel ready until we have a replacement rug.

My students need a clean and spacious place to sit for our community gatherings.

Here, on this new, large, clean rug we will come together to learn how to work as a community, listen to read-alouds, learn math problems and how to spell tricky words. We will work together in partners, or small groups and share our ideas with one another. We will use this rug every single day in our quest to achieve!
