Community Service- Little Leaders Helping to Create A Sharing Library

My Project

The resources I’m requesting will help my prekindergartens lead a community service project focused on increasing access to books and promoting literacy within our school and surrounding neighborhood. Our project centers around creating and maintaining a Sharing Library, a free-standing outdoor book box where families can “take a book, leave a book.” This initiative allows our students to go beyond the classroom and become leaders in spreading the joy of reading throughout the community.

The Library Box, post and sign will be installed just outside our school, serving not only our students and their families but also others in the neighborhood who may not have regular access to children’s books.

My students will help paint and decorate the box to reflect messages of kindness, sharing, and the importance of reading. They will also assist in choosing books to place inside sorting donations, and keeping the library tidy—with adult guidance.

This community service project empowers our young learners to actively contribute to a cause that benefits others. It allows them to see themselves as capable and caring individuals who can make a meaningful difference. By leading this project, they’ll learn about responsibility, empathy, and the power of giving.

Included are some books to help us start our sharing library including Sesame Street Elmo Manners Books for Kids Toddlers - Set of 8 Manners Books which will help with good behavior and helping our community.

Through this project, my students will support the broader school community and nearby families by increasing access to literacy resources and modeling how even our youngest citizens can be community helpers. With your support, our little learners will become big readers—and even bigger leaders.
