This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
These kindergartners love to be at school. They love to learn, and they enjoy being an important part of their community. Nearly all the students that attend our school live in low-income households, but that doesn't stop them from contributing generously to their learning environment. They proudly cheer each other on, lift each other up, and push each other forward.
The students at this school come from a wide variety of different cultures and have vastly diverse identities.
They are curious about themselves, their classmates, and the cultural diversity within their community.
Every student in this group of kindergarteners is special and unique, they are kind and considerate, and they are well mannered and respectful. Our diversity is what makes us special. These students utilize their positive personal traits within that diversity. The extended their manners, kindness and consideration to those that look and behave differently than they do, and they constantly help to make the entire world a better place.
My Project
Kindergarteners are just beginning to learn about the amazing diversity that exists in their world. I want to give the kindergarten students at our school the opportunity to see themselves in the in the books they read. By continuing to build an inclusive learning community and inviting classroom libraries, these students will learn to value their own identity and celebrate the diversity that surrounds them.
These books will continue to add to our growing diverse library, and they will show the students the diversity that exists in the world of work.
As students read about the diversity in the jobs held by our community helpers, they will begin to see that any job that interest them is a possibility for them, regardless of their personal identity.
Additionally, providing them with dramatic play costumes will help them try on the role of a community helper and recognize the superpowers in all community jobs. The dramatic play that occurs as students try on the roles of community helpers will extend the lessons students are learning through their diverse library. Students will have the opportunity to see themselves represented in these roles as they engage in role play in their costumes. This is a very powerful way to show students that there is no job that is for any one type of person, rather all jobs are held by a diverse group of individuals with a wide variety of personal identities.
