This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I could not be happier than to be teaching in a bilingual second grade classroom. My students are inquisitive, caring, and dedicated to their education. They are proud of being bilingual and excited about what their future holds. Some want to be police officers. Others want to be teachers. The students' families struggle economically, yet consistently prioritize their children's education.
In this class, we build a community around valuing each person's experiences and languages.
My students passionately write about topics anywhere from Roblox to chameleons to Guatemalan food. Some of my students are reading at high levels of English and Spanish, while others have very little time in this country and are still practicing their ABCs. All enjoy singing along as I play my ukulele, dancing together, and playing math games. They are truly an incredible group! I look forward to our continued growth together.
My Project
The carpet is the heart of our classroom community. It is the space where we slow down each day to listen to each students' experience, desires and interests. It is the place where we share our gratitude for the day. Also, it is the place where grab a pillow, extend our legs, and dive into an engaging book. It is a cozy place, a cherished place. And yet the carpet we have has seen much better days. As a new teacher, initially I did not have a carpet that would fit all of my students. So, I luckily found an old TK carpet. It had stains, but I figured we could use it until it was worn out. That time has come.
It is time for a new rug for our classroom that will reflect our community connection and cherished learning that takes place in that space.
Not only would a this carpet give us a fresh start, but also it reflects our bilingual class. In our classroom, English is written in blue and Spanish is written in green so that students can easily distinguish and compare the two languages. I always appreciate items that beautifully combine these colors in order to emphasize to the children the incredible beauty in the fact that they are bilingual. This rug would fit right in with my bilingual students! Thank you for your consideration.
