My classroom participates in a 4th grade gifted Spanish Immersion program. We live in a high poverty population, and these students come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We spend half the day learning English reading, writing, math, and social studies, and the other half learning Spanish and science.
Our students work hard to succeed and learn!
We participate in a lot of engaging and hands-on activities to learn the English and Spanish languages and develop critical-thinking and communication skills.
My Project
My students have begun to love building forts in class when we have indoor recess. They have been bringing blankets from home and moving the desks around to make little houses for different groups. I have seen them work together, communicate, problem solve and build a stronger community through this play. When I saw the Ultimate Fort Builder, I knew my classroom had to have it!
Not only will my students continue to learn how to work together, problem solve, and strengthen relationships through this activity, we also will be able to connect this to many content areas.
When we learn about two and three dimensional figures in geometry, we can use the fort builder to make life size shapes! When we learn about different indigenous cultures from America, we can build structures that mimic their native homes and structures to learn more about them. As students have indoor recesses or activities in during our Spanish time, they will have opportunities to utilize and enrich their language in an authentic setting. My students will have the opportunity to become true architects in my class and explore different ways to use the engineering process of creating, testing, and adjusting to make something the best it can be. The Ultimate Fort Builder will be a game changer for my students!
