My Students
My students are from a large suburban community. Among the population, 38% are black or African-American and 8% are Hispanic. 18.9% have completed a bachelor's program. 50% of the residents are married. The median household income is $44,279. Although the statistics do not disclose an extreme disparity, they do show that families within the Hampton, Georgia community do not have a lot of room in their budgets beyond taking care of the bare necessities. And to access the bare necessities, parents have to work long hours. Many of the students do not travel outside of the community with the exception of school field trips. I can tell you, most of my parents are present for important events--conferences, school programs, award ceremonies--but they rely greatly upon the education system to provide a foundation and model of academic skills.
My Project
I am requesting an area rug for my classroom to help create a more inviting learning environment and to provide students with a designated area to gather as a class. Being the model of academic excellence requires creating spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, foster peer interaction, and give each student a sense of belonging.
Also, an area rug would give students the necessary opportunity to practice respect for others and appropriate ways to socialize.
Such spaces, as provided by an area rug, would help students not to infringe on the comfort and personal space of others. By helping students to learn boundaries first, community fellowship will be strengthened. I believe students respond more positively within spaces that are welcoming and appealing which will inadvertently improve peer relationships and engagement in academic discourse.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
