My Project

Few things are as powerful for building community as gathering together around a table and breaking bread with one another. My colleagues and I are creating a new course and in our summer planning, we've decided we'd love to host class community breakfasts on Fridays. It will be a space to connect, share, and nourish one another with food, stories, what we've learned each week, questions that have come up for folks, how everyone is feeling and doing, and more.

The Friday morning meals will provide space and time for building community within our class through formal check-ins and informal conversation, by celebrating what we are learning through sharing in organic ways at the breakfast table, and hopefully a bonus will be the boosting of on-time arrival to the first class of the day!

While being certain to tend to class members' allergies, food sensitivities, and preferences, we will plan pancake breakfasts, waffle feasts, smoothies, oatmeal for cold winter mornings...we'll supplement the bulk supplies in our project with fresh fruits and greens to increase the nutritional value. Once we get going, we will plans meals alongside our students. We aim to close the semester with a pot-luck meal that hopefully their own families/loved ones can join us for. As part of our weekly routines and rituals, all class members will be invited to take on roles: planning, cooking, setting the table, planning weekly class content discussion prompt, and leaving no trace.

We will also incorporate mindfulness and affirmation practices into our weekly community meals. The students will help create and facilitate this.

The project supplies will get us started: cooking equipment (griddle, slow cooker), plates, tableclothes, pancake mix, & bins for storing supplies. This will help us build a warm, welcoming, and important weekly ritual with our students.
