My Students
My students are bright, energetic, creative 7 and 8 year olds that love to come to school. Many of them speak several languages and have trouble reading and writing in English. Many of my students are being raised in single parent households or by grandparents or in a multifamily setting. Most of my students receive a free breakfast and lunch at school. All of my students and parents choose to attend my school by choice. They provide daily transportation for the students and a daily uniform. This is a hardship for many of the families but they sacrifice to do it for their children. They feel that our school is a safe environment for their children and we offer an amazing culture for the students each day. We try to focus on each child's positive potential and ability to grow.
My Project
When my students see a rock they wonder where it came from and they want to read books to find out where it came from. This increases their ability to research and remember and learn. They need books about maps and cultures in our classroom that will enhance their learning. So many of them want to learn. My students need to be able to hold real rocks and touch them when we learn about rocks. I want my students to be able to build with real math manipulatives and touch them. Right now we try to draw them but it is not the same. They ask me for homework and they ask me for paper and pencils to take home so that they can write or draw at home. They do not have access to paper or pencils or books at home. They want to learn about everything. Can you imagine not having a pen anytime you want one? School should have books and paper and supplies available for learning. Math should provide materials to count and touch and feel. Every child needs to hold 1000 things so know they can imagine how much that really is.
