My Students

re·sil·ien·cy | \ ri-ˈzil-yən(t)-sē

an ability to recover from or adjust easily to adversity or change, Merriam Webster

You’ve heard people say, “Children are resilient”. The student population at our school are living proof of that very statement. Our community has all come together as one with the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in September 2017, the Spring floods in May of 2019 and lastly, Tropical Storm Imelda, which struck our families and neighbors just this past September.

All three of these weather events have affected our school families and our surrounding community. We have seen tragedy become community. We have seen devastation become rebuilding. We have seen isolation turn to togetherness.

During Hurricane Harvey, our school was used as a “lily pad” to temporarily house families in transition to permanent shelter. To this day, we still have our students' families putting their lives back together from the various events.

My Project

Looking back and projecting toward the future of CMS, we feel that a digital marquee would be a perfect way to share information with parents, students and community members, allowing us to distribute valuable information quickly.

Our current marquee is 38 years old, original to when the school was built.

It displays five lines of information and due to size limitations, most of these lines consist of abbreviations. We prioritize what we feel is the most important to share; however, this excludes many of the exciting events our students are involved in. In this fast-paced world, having the ability to digitally update information as often as needed would benefit our students, our parents, and our community.

Our daily PA announcements are how the students receive information. A weekly emailed newsletter is how we communicate with parents. The current marquee mimics some of this information, but certainly not everything. An upgraded digital version would play a key role in parents and students having access to school schedule changes, Holiday closures, celebrations, state testing days, report card distribution & information, athletic events, performances and library book fairs as well as many other important announcements. The community would also benefit from valuable information for general events that take place at the school. As an example, every year, our Service Learning club host’s a Veteran’s Day Celebration at our Veteran’s Honor Garden. This is a public event intended to bring neighbors together. We also have a variety of clinics, meetings and camps we offer to school-aged children during the summer months. The proposed marquee would be awesome for relaying this information to students, parents and the community.

Finally, an electronic marquee would be an excellent way to give "shout outs" to our award winners throughout the year.
