This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a class with kindergarten through second grade students with moderate to severe autism. The school I teach at has one of the largest autism populations in our county.
My students have diverse communication and sensory needs. Some of my students rely solely on sign language and pictures to communicate what they need. Others are capable of speech but are echolaic or script. They are unable to communicate basic wants and needs without assistance.
Sensory issues for students with autism complicate the way they interact with their environment. I try to provide them with a variety of materials to make them aware of the world and be comfortable with it. And much of what I provide I buy myself.
The resources I chose for my students will benefit my students in two different ways. They will address their communication needs and their sensory needs. Picture communication symbols give students an alternate way to communicate with people around them and they also promote oral language. By using the picture symbols I chose they will have symbols to express thoughts, wants and needs. These are durable and will be able to provide communication assistance for many children. The sensory games and equipment will assist my students with coming into contact with new experiences and being able to tolerate more things they may encounter in the every day world that most people wouldn't even notice. Sensory issues effect students with Autism in a huge way. Exposing them to new touches, smells, etc. will help make them more tolerant to their environment and new environments that they may come into contact with. Providing them with the extra sensory stimulation with these games can also help avoid future behaviors that can be brought on by sensory sensitivity.
Your support would benefit my students in multiple ways. It would help them succeed not only school but in life as well. I would be able to provide more opportunities for success in communication and possibly make our world seem a little less frighting to them.
