My students need materials in color; therefore, a laserjet color printer with ink is needed.
My students need laminate paper to preserve communication materials.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
These students have so much to share with the world. They know so much more than what may be perceived and yet, often this is overlooked because they cannot communicate in a typical way, such as using words. This year, they all deserve colorful communication visuals to express themselves.
My school is for children with multiple disabilities as well as emotional disturbance and is located in a diverse, low-income neighborhood.
The students that I work with have diagnoses which include cerebral palsy, autism, shaken baby syndrome, ADHD and intellectual disability. The students with emotional disturbance are working hard to improve maladaptive behaviors so that academics are not disrupted. Many will then be able to transition into a community school. The students with multiple disabilities are working on improving activities of daily living as well as improving their communication, as many are minimal verbal or nonverbal. All of my students constantly inspire me by demonstrating how much they know when provided with a way to communicate that works for them. To be a part of the growth of these unique students has been an overwhelmingly positive experience.
My Project
The printer, ink and laminate paper will be used to make communication materials, including communication boards and PECS symbols, which the nonverbal and minimally verbal children will use to communicate. Because all of these students respond positively to colorful and bright visuals, the classroom will have a colorful theme at all times of the year, to encourage a positive learning environment. Additionally, books which may be difficult to understand, will be adapted with easy to understand visuals by including communication symbols on the pages, so that the students can match the symbols to the pictures. The students will also create social stories, which will be created in MS PowerPoint and used to help students who find routine or new activities difficult, such as transitioning to the bus everyday. They will read their social stories with photographs of the activity, to help them overcome difficult situations so that more interaction in the community will be achieved.
A donation for this project will allow for these students to receive more durable communication materials in color.
Many students with special needs are highly responsive to bright, colorful visuals. Students will make projects and print them on the computer in color, such as social stories which will help them overcome difficult situations in various environments, while encouraging interaction with others in the school and community. Materials in Spanish will be made for bilingual students.
