Communicating in the Real World: Sharing Mathematics
My students need a document camera.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In a visual world, students want to SEE the math and not just listen to someone explain the math. A challenge I find in the classroom is that students are unable to share their graphs or solutions to a problem with the entire class. The document camera will allow students to display classwork.
I want to make learning math more interesting and inspiring for my students who attend a low-performing inner-city public high school.
As a math teacher to over two-hundred students each year, majority of my students begin the school year "afraid" and "bored" of math. I try to counter their negative perceptions of mathematics by inspiring students to think of mathematics as a language and a gateway to a whole new world of possibilities.
For many of my students, they will be the first in their family to attend college. Most of the students at my high school are in some form of foster care or live with a single parent or relative and have not had experiences with adults who are engineers or doctors. I am a proponent of opportunities and I use my classroom to motivate students to explore the possibilities of attending college or having a career in math and science. Donors help to fill in the gap between the environmental reality of my students and what is needed to achieve.
My Project
Students want to SEE mathematics happening around them and not just HEAR about it. Lecture-based learning requires very little investment from students. I believe that to inspire learning, I have to first engage my students and motivate them to invest their time and energy into learning mathematics. This means, students must have daily opportunities to explain, share, and communicate mathematics with each other. The document camera allows any piece of paper to be projected onto a large screen. Students can display their answers from a worksheet or a graph paper.
Traditionally, the following scenario is likely -
Teacher: Who can tell me what the solution to problem #5 is?
Student: I got a graph that goes straight up.
An obscure answer, other students may feel unsure if they got the same graph too. With the document camera, a student can project their actual graph and show visually to other students what the correct answer should look like. "Yes! My graph looks like that."
As a teacher for over 10 years at this same high school, I have learned that students will stretch their minds and learn higher-level concepts if they are hands-on and take ownership in their learning.
These interactions and experiences are necessary to master the standards for the course. With your donation, I can continue to provide a tool that meets my students' academic needs. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and I hope you find it worthwhile to help my students achieve.
