When our school encountered the common challenges of student literacy, we recognized the need for effective solutions. Through the unwavering commitment of our teachers and administration, we are thrilled to announce the establishment of a new school library. We eagerly anticipate providing students with a dedicated space to engage in oral language, reading, and writing – essential components of literacy.
However, our endeavors would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the specific need for resources that expand vocabulary and sharpen research skills.
We are a Title I school, with a student body that is roughly 97% Black and brown. 14% of students are eligible for an IEP, and another 14% are English language learners. Additionally, only 20% of our students attended accredited preschools. We know that research demonstrates jarring predictions regarding the implications of these demographics on both literacy and life chances. But our students are more than these numbers. They are resilient, creative, curious, and deserving of the same opportunities that other students have to expand their worlds and find their place within it.
We want our youngest scholars to acquire the vocabulary they need to express their thoughts, understandings and ideas with fluency. We want our older students to enrich their learning, deepen their coursework and pursue their budding interests with information. Most of all, we want our students to begin to see themselves as truly part of a global community of learners and change makers, and this begins with knowledge.
Our library ribbon cutting will be held March 14. Any contribution that you make before February 29 will allow us to make these goals a reality. We hope sincerely that you feel led to donate, and we are so appreciative of your contributions to the next generation of readers, thinkers ,and innovators.
