This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 9th grade Emerging Bilinguals, Special Needs, and Regular Ed. students. They each come from different backgrounds bringing something new to our classroom. Each day we have 20 minutes of independent reading time. They have grown accustomed to reading daily and have grown to enjoy this time. I am now running out of books for them to read! My goal is to find novels that can relate more to their own stories and find more interesting. Many did not speak English as their first language, but have been studying for 4-5 years and now feel comfortable reading longer novels and graphic novels in English. This excites me as I can see their confidence in the English language growing and expanding. We are a Title 1 school and provide a lot of support for our students. We have a positive school culture where students and staff work as a team.

My Project

As we move forward in this year's theme of "Coming of Age," I am searching for a novel to study that reflects a character growing and coming of age in today’s societal changes. The suggested novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, I feel is becoming less popular among students and they have shown in the past to have a hard time staying interested. Also, the language can be difficult at times for ELL students. I am highly interested as well as my students, in the novel: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The novel features a female African American protagonist who is suffering from the loss of a friend due to racism. She is trying to navigate this hard time while still dealing with being a teenager and making sense of where she belongs in a world that doesn’t seem to have a definite place for her. This novel still encompasses the same important themes from To Kill a Mockingbird, however offers a more current day and familiar context.

Having 30 copies of this would ensure the class studying the novel would be able to take the novel to and from school, allowing time for independent reading at home.
