My students are a vibrant group of third graders that come from a wide range of backgrounds and family situations in the city of Durham. Our school provides a common ground for each of my students, where they are able to come to school ready to learn knowing they are walking into a safe environment. We spend about half of our day in this classroom and they need to have spaces where they feel comfortable and relaxed so we can do our best learning!
My Project
I think the most important part of school is to help create lifelong learners! Children need to be excited about reading in order to be successful. We need to provide them with many opportunities through the week for them to listen to and read stories in order to discover where books can take us, whether it is a fantasy world, a relatable experience, or a new topic that we would like to learn more about. They also need comfortable spaces to read these books in.
Think of a place where you like to read a book .... maybe it is on the couch, laying across the floor, or snuggled up with a pillow or stuffed animal.
I know that once I find a comfy spot to read, I can sit and read for hours. In order to help my students strengthen their reading skills by spending more time reading, I need to have more comfortable spaces for them to read in. By donating to this project you are helping them find that comfortable space where they can escape to another world.
My students need a small rug for our classroom library, 4 seat cushions, 6 pillows, 4 chair balls, and a pencil sharpener.
