This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a second grade teacher to 25 diverse students. Our school is an inner city public school where nearly all students come from low-income households. In addition to this, my students attend a school that is a part of an underfunded school district. It can be a struggle at times for my students to reach their full potential when basic needs are not being met. My students are just like other children, eager to learn and curious about the world around them. They are creative, caring and hard workers. Financial strains should not impede them in receiving the quality education every child deserves. It is thanks to donors that I am able to provide my students with the resources they need to receive the education they deserve.
My Project
Every single day my students do a 20 minute round of both independent reading and buddy reading. Before we start, we go over the two reasons why it is important to do these things each day: to become a better reader and because it is fun!
It is my goal to make each of my students enjoy reading and to feel confident in their abilities.
Observing my students reading this month, I've thought of some things that will help keep them engaged in reading and excited to do it each day. One thing that will help is more seating options. I allow my students to sit anywhere they would like in the room during independent reading time. I know they love a chance to get away from their desk for a bit. Right now their seating choices are limited. Having a few comfy seating options will give more students a chance to sit somewhere different. I would love to give them more options, and also to have them look forward to coming to school every day and having a comfy reading spot. In addition to this, whisper phones are another resource that would benefit my students. This will allow them to be able to hear themselves read, which will help them with blending and proper sound use. They will also help my students read more fluently. I have also added books that will improve my student's Math skills. My classroom library is currently lacking Math books. I would like to add a bin to our library labeled "Math books". Reading books about skills such as counting money and measurement will integrate two subjects and help my students build skills all around!
