Comfy Reading Spots with Books to Match Post Sandy
My students need a comfy rug to sit or lay on while they read books on their current reading level and writing supplies to respond to their reading when they are done.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember sitting for hours with a favorite book in a comfortable space? My students have read most of the leveled books in the library and are craving more, with a comfy spot to match.
My class consists of twelve wonderful and enthusiastic special needs students.
They range from kindergarten to second grade. These same children were affected by Hurricane Sandy in October. Many of the leveled books were lost when they relocated to stay warm and eat. Many of my students read below level and are in need of high interest books to continue a love for reading.
My Project
A new rug will give the students an inviting space to get comfortable and "jump" into a book just like their favorite characters Jack and Annie of the Magic Tree House Series. They enjoy listening to this series read aloud and want to read them on their own. Reading leveled books and guided reading will help the student's reading levels increase so that they can eventually read higher level books. This is important since so many are reading below level due to various developmental delays. The requested writing supplies will enable the students to respond to books they read, This will help me to assess their comprehension and growth.
The gift of reading is a gift that will last a lifetime.
It's important for my twelve multi-aged and multi-leveled special needs students to learn that reading can take them to extraordinary places, we just need to take smaller steps. I know they will be successful readers! Motivation for reading comes from unexpected places, perhaps this experience will be the catalyst for one or many of my students.
