My Project

I'm returning to work after a year on sabbatical and have spent a lot of time thinking about how I would like to improve our classroom library space. One area of opportunity I'd like to work on is providing more flexible and buddy seating options for the Multicultural Literature and Social Emotional Learning library nooks.

Flexible seating items like rockers and cushion carts offers many benefits in the classroom, including positive impacts on engagement, focus, teamwork, and has the potential to encourage students to further develop their self-awareness and take ownership of their own actions.

When students have cozy, fun seating options, they’re usually more excited to read or join in. Letting them choose where to sit gives them a little control, which helps with motivation too.

A lot of kids, especially those who need to move around or have trouble sitting still actually focus better when they’re in a seat that suits them. A wobbly stool or a soft floor cushion might help them stay on task longer than a traditional desk chair.

Flexible seating naturally supports group work and conversation. If you're reading together or doing partner activities, it's easier for students to talk and share ideas when they can move around.

It’s also a great way to help kids learn to make smart choices. If they get to pick where they sit, they start thinking about what helps them learn best. That’s a powerful skill.

I'm looking forward to welcoming an ethnically, socio-economically, diverse group of learners, some of which have individualized education plans to support specific learning needs. Your support will help me meet those needs by providing seating that can help improve balance, develop core strength, improve coordination, self-regulate successfully.
