This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My Bronx teenagers come with so much vivacious energy and lots of opinions, which too often (sadly) include negative experiences and feelings about reading. I want to expose them to texts that reflect themselves; characters that eat the same foods and navigate the same neighborhood elements. Students are more likely to love reading when they see themselves in the stories they read. I'm turning to DonorsChoose to help acquire new diverse novels that reflect representation.
While witnessing some the successes of our independent reading unit last semester was incredible, (Students who hated reading falling in love with their chosen novel), I noticed some students had trouble transitioning from hallway or cafeteria antics to being still, being comfortable, being ready to tune the world out, TO READ.
So I had this idea to carve out a space in my classroom to accommodate a few (3 to be specific) comfy chairs and a small table for a nook that would be assigned and rotated for preferential seating. They love it when things are pretty. All students would have opportunities to use this space by design and also can earn extra time in the nook.
My students are amazing, and strong, and creative, but sometimes lacking in their formal educational history. Giving them this space will encourage, reward, and empower them. Lastly, I would love to offer small snacks as an incentive to keep our brain power going, even when we don't feel like reading, or for those who still haven't found their perfect book-match after book-interviews. I appreciate your time and consideration of our project.
