My Students
Who doesn't love to curl up with a good book? My students need a rug and comfy bean bag chairs to create a comfy cozy area to read in their classroom.
My students are a vivacious group of first graders living in a high crime, high poverty urban area.
First grade is a very exciting time. Besides the loss of a teeth on a daily basis they are also learning to make decisions, solve problems and become life long readers. One of the best parts of teaching students how to read is showing them how to enjoy reading, and that reading isn't just something that you do in school but that it can be an enjoyable past time as well. Studies have shown that students that do not receive early foundations in reading in first grade will continue to struggle with reading as they grow older. In my classroom I not only want to provide these foundations but I want to instill a life long passion for reading by making it an enjoyable experience and environment for them.
My Project
In the lives of many of my students school can be the only structured, calm and stimulating environment they experience and many will not have a quiet comfortable place to curl up and enjoy a good book. By providing the addition of a rug and several bean bag chairs my students this year and for years to come will have a place that they can develop as readers and learn to use reading as an enjoyable past time as well as learn to seek out a calm and comfortable place to read to themselves or with someone outside of school.
The addition of these resources will aid in providing a foundation of a life long love for reading.
It is my goal to get my students excited about reading from day one by modeling the habits of what good readers do, and providing a place that they can enjoy reading by themselves, with me or with a buddy!
