My Students
Did you know that if a child's classroom has a library corner, that child will read 50% more books than if it did not (according to the Children's Literacy Initiative)? Now, what if that was a cozy inviting space with comfy child-size furniture?
I teach first grade at a charter school in Washington DC.
In the coming school year I will have 25 adorable six year olds. Our school is very diverse - 50% African American, 30% Hispanic, and 20% Caucasian. We believe every student of every race, socioeconomic status, and home language will reach high levels of academic achievement and be prepared to succeed at the college of his or her choice.
My Project
Over my first couple of years of teaching, I have been purchasing and receiving donations to create my classroom library. I finally feel like I am on my way to having a great selection of books for my students. There weren't ANY books in my room the first day I walked in! Now that I have or am getting the books, I would like to make the library corner in my room comfy and cozy so that the students want to visit it.
You can help make the place with the books the place where my kids want to be.
And the more they are there, the more they will read. The project will help kids who don't always get a lot of reading encouragement at home learn to love to read. Thank you.
