My Project
According to a study done by the Minnesota State University, they found that students that have the option of flexible seating show a significant increase in academic skills (Henderson, 2022). When thinking about seating within the classroom, typically you think of desks or tables with plain chairs, however, there are so many more option for the classroom. According to Helean, "flexible seating is the practice of allowing and providing many seating options for students." (Helean, 2020).
When giving students options of seats, it can be challenging to start, however, with practice and consistency, it has been found that students can be very successful when given these choices.
With these two pieces of furniture, I hope that I can begin to provide a warm and welcoming classroom that my students will feel comfortable and safe in. In my classroom, we utilize the Conscious Discipline strategies. With these materials, I plan on expanding my safe spot, making the space more inviting and cozy. The safe spot is for the students who may need a break from the classroom. This area is to be used for the students to recognize their emotions, feel through them, and then be able to join back in with their peers. According to a teacher testimony from Education Week, she claimed that her students have a sense of comfort and belonging in her classroom.
My goal with this grant is to be able to provide my students with a comfortable area that they can feel safe in and be able to talk about their emotions. I will be able to measure this throughout the year by looking at my students social emotional regulation skills.
