My Students
A calm, warm, comfortable, and inviting atmosphere in a classroom sets the stage for learning success. When students feel comfortable and safe in their environment, they are more apt to take risks in their learning and approach new challenges successfully.
My students are first graders in a public elementary school in Washington state where about 45% of students receive free and reduced lunch, which indicates the proportion of low-income families in our school.
In this diverse Title 1 school, there are a number of English Language Learners as well. My students are eager learners and deserve the most comfortable classroom atmosphere I can create as a backdrop to their successful learning.
My Project
I would love to provide my students with the comfortable, functional learning area. With a new large, color-blocked carpet, I can gather students easily in our whole group learning area. The color blocks help with classroom management, allowing students to pick an appropriate place to sit quickly, without "popping the bubbles" of their friends and neighbors. A soft sitting area for whole group lessons will allow students to stay focused on the learning at hand instead of sitting uncomfortably on a hard floor.
The carpet will also provide a soft area for reading and learning when not in whole group lessons. Some students have difficulty focusing and learning at desks and need a comfortable place to stretch out and learn. The large carpet can accommodate many children's diverse learning needs.
