This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a third grade class in East Harlem. Our school is located in such a diverse and culturally rich neighborhood. For many of my 3rd graders, it'll be their first time back in the building since the start of Covid. I want to make sure they have a clean, safe, and welcoming classroom with new materials to get them excited for the amazing year to come. My students are super energetic, highly motivated learners that love to spend time learning, discussing and discovering new things on the rug during mini-lessons.
My Project
Daily reading, writing, math, and social studies mini-lessons always start off on our carpet. It is where we spend most of our day. The carpet area is where students discuss, collaborate, and grow. Our current carpet has seen better years and doesn’t provide enough seating for all students with the current guidelines in place. As a result, I’ve had to modify seating. Some work at their desks during mini-lessons. The carpet has always been a place where students collaborate. The modified seating interrupts collaboration and minimizes the opportunity for community building. The circle carpet spots will allow them to have a clean space to continue their learning while allowing them to socially distance themselves. Our valuable carpet time doesn’t need to change just because everything else did! It just needs a little upgrade. Helps us make this possible:
