My Students

Hello! I spent the past eight years teaching middle school. This year I'm transitioning to teaching elementary. I'm excited about utilizing technology to enhance instruction and organize curriculum content. My students come from a diverse social and cultural backgrounds.

We're a fourth and fifth grade combination class.

I like to think that a combo class provides students dual opportunities to learn concepts. That whatever my students don't totally understand in year 1, they'll get a second at it in chance in year 2.

The students at Ortega care deeply about their community and about achieving academically. We like to think of ourselves as a school that sits on the top of a hill, with the ocean right to our west and the skies above!

My Project

I'm hoping to gradually transition into flexible seating, where students have choice seating. As our school moves towards modernizing the classroom furniture, having "comfy spaces" for students to read, gather, and form small groups will aide in student engagement, access to curriculum, and and social-emotional learning.

Currently, our classroom is equipped with two large pillows (seats 1-3 students), an area rug (seats approx.

20 students), and a chaise (used as a Peace Corner). Students tend to have conflict over the use of this furniture. So, the more comfy spaces we have the less they'll butt heads.

Thanks in advance for your support with this project. I've limited the project to just a few items. Ideally, we'd benefit from five sets of the small seat pillows.
