Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am so excited and proud to be a school social worker. In my first few months so far in this position, I have been energized by working with curious, energetic students, and passionate, dedicated teachers. Otis serves 308 students, most of whom are Black and Latinx. We are proud to have a strong special education department, with 33% of our students being diverse learners. As a social worker, I primarily work with disabled students who have challenges with anxiety, mood regulation, and social skills. I also work with non-disabled students who are in need of mental health counseling.

I want to provide my students with a calm and comforting space when we have social work sessions as they work on their social, emotional, and behavioral health.

In many ways, my students have the odds stacked against them: structural racism, income inequality, and ableism prevent them from accessing high quality resources. I want to be the best possible school social worker for them.

With this project, I will make the physical space of the social work room cozy, accessible and inclusive for all students with bean bags, floor pillows, yoga ball chairs, and an area rug. The items I am requesting will make it easier for students to feel at ease and comfortable in the social work room. A welcoming environment helps facilitate a strong therapeutic relationship between me and my students, and this will help students meet their social, emotional, and behavioral goals. Thank you so much for reading and considering my project!
