Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs, and many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line and rely on our free meal plan for their children's breakfast and lunch.
Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.
Each day we practice letters, phonics and sight words. We study science and math. We incorporate technology through the use of iPad apps, and we learn beginning engineering concepts through the use of building blocks and other manipulatives. At the end of the school day, the children are so excited to see their parents and tell them all the things they did at school. The parents are very supportive, and they enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories and learning new things.
My Project
A new classroom carpet would provide a sitting space for my students during our whole group lessons. They are very young, and sitting at desks or tables, which are further away from the teacher, is just too distracting. Being up close where they can see what is being presented, and where the teacher can see them, will help them to focus and remember what they are seeing and hearing.
The carpet I am requesting is designed with defined spaces for each student.
The children know where to sit when they are called together for story time or for a lesson. This makes for a quick assembly and helps with transitions from one activity to another. A new carpet would be more sanitary and comfortable for the children and would look appealing and inviting. It is also a great place for block building activities as playing on the carpet reduces noise.
Your donation will help a great group of four-year-olds! Thank you for reading and considering this project.
